Georgia Updates Classic and Antique Car Laws
New Legislation Establishes Clearer Definitions
The Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has released new regulations that clarify definitions for classic and antique cars in the state. These updates aim to streamline the titling and registration process and ensure that vehicles meet specific criteria to qualify for designated categories.
Classic Car Classification
Under the new regulations, a vehicle is considered a classic in Georgia if it is at least 25 years old and has been designated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as a classic vehicle. Additionally, the vehicle must be in its original condition or have been restored to its original specifications.
Antique License Plates
To qualify for an antique license plate, a vehicle must meet the following criteria:
- Be manufactured in 1970 or earlier
- Be in good condition and safe to operate
- Have not been modified significantly from its original design
- Be used primarily for exhibition or historical purposes
Historic Vehicle Titling
For vehicles between the model years 1963 and 1985, owners can now apply for a historic vehicle title if they have a title issued in their name and the vehicle has not been modified significantly from its original design.
These updated regulations aim to provide clearer guidance for owners of classic and antique vehicles, ensuring that they can accurately classify their cars and obtain the appropriate licenses and titles.
